The real comparison in the show isn't between the son(protagonist) and his father, but between the protagonist's mother and his girlfriend who ends up transforming into the kind of woman his mother is.
While the protagonist's disdain for his father's weakness is misplaced, for his father was a wiser man who could see through his mother's manipulations unlike his naive self.
